A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hold was half full of salt when the cook first saw the serpent turn beneath the keel. By the third week out from Haddrow Sound the whole crew had stopped calling it a trick of the swell. It moved the way the ship moved, always a bend ahead, folding its long body into the grey water until every wave seemed to have a spine. Captain Orla Venn kept the fires high and the bread counted twice, and told no one what she had been promised on the harbour wall.

The promise had come from an old woman selling dried herring on the quay. She had pressed a coil of tarred cord into Orla's hand. 'When it asks, give it the one thing you have never spent.' Orla had laughed. Now the water went silver and the sky closed down, and the serpent rose beside the rail with its horned head turned toward her, and it spoke in the voice of wind through a loose shutter.

'Give me your name,' it said. 'Not the one your mother shouted across the fields. The one you were given before you could argue.' Orla opened her mouth and found it gone quiet, like a bell after the rope is cut. Names were the only coin the sea would take on a crossing this long, and she had spent hers for thirty years on rope, wages and pride without once counting them.

She gave it up plainly, the way a child gives up a stone. The serpent slid back under the hull and the sea lay flat as a plate. Next morning the cook found the tarred cord knotted round the mainmast, and the captain's log held a single line in Orla's own hand: Landfall. Under it she had left a blank where her name had been, and she never filled it in.
