Ornamental lace-style tattoo down a leg

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large ornamental design runs from the upper thigh down the outside of the leg to the ankle, with floral motifs, scrollwork and a diamond lattice panel. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading that gives the pattern a lace-like depth. The ink is entirely black and grey against bare skin, and the leg is photographed diagonally on a pale bed.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind had already taken your hat before the hospice bell fell silent behind you, so you kept your hands buried in your sleeves to stop the bobbins knocking together. Under your coat the bundle of lace lay against your ribs, eleven yards of it, folded in tissue that Aunt Margit had dampened with cold tea so the thread would not crack. She had taught you the pattern at six: a diamond lattice, then a rosette, then a scroll curling back on itself like a fern. She called it the Col's Own. You had always thought it was only a pretty border.

The path narrowed where the rock leaned in. A mule had gone ahead that morning, and its hoofprints were filling with fine snow, one after another, neat as stitches. You counted them to keep your mind off the cold. At the third cairn you stopped and unfolded a corner of the lace, and in the grey light the lattice showed what it had always shown on the parlour wall in Harrowmere: a map. Every diamond was a valley, every rosette a spring, and the scroll ran along the line of the ridge you had been climbing all morning.

You had never looked at it from the mountain side. Margit had known the way across by heart and had sewn it into a dowry that nobody in the valley would think to read. You knelt, weighted the four corners with stones from the cairn, and left the lace spread open on the snow where the wind could read it too. By dusk the frost had softened the diamonds, and far below, a bell began again, as if someone in the valley had finally found the way.
