Lily and vine leg tattoo
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A leg tattoo of several lily flowers joined by curling filigree vines and dotted accents. The flowers are shaded in soft grey washes with fine dark linework defining the petals and stamens. The design follows the natural curve of the leg from above the knee down towards the ankle, with the largest blooms at the top.

Dear Nell,

The tiger lilies came up along the south wall again this year, three days after you left, as if they had been waiting for you to go. Dad would have called it spite. I cut the first ones on Tuesday and carried them through the orchard in a bucket, past the Bramley trees with their windfalls going soft in the grass, and the wasps were so thick over the drops that I had to hold my breath walking past.
Mrs Hadley from the cottage came up to see what the fuss was about. She stood with her hand over her eyes and said the spots on the petals looked like someone had flicked ink from a pen, and she was right, though I hadn't said so. You always said they looked like they were trying to hide something. I thought about that while I wound the vine round the trellis, the thin green tendrils that keep reaching for the apple branches no matter how often I pull them back.
The strangest thing is the grey light we've had all week. Everything looks washed out, like a photograph left on the sill. The lilies are the only colour that stays put. I pressed one between the pages of Mum's cookery book, the one with the broken spine, and when I opened it this morning the stamens had left a dark print on the page, fine as pencil, just the shape of it still there.
Write when you can. The orchard misses you more than I let on.
