Ornamental lotus pendant design with chain swags

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of an ornate central motif resembling a lotus or flame, with layered petals, beaded dots and a teardrop pendant hanging below. Thin chain-like swags extend to the left and right edges, with curled scrolls at each end. The shading is in soft graphite greys on a cream sheet, with the design centred and a mechanical pencil resting across the top right.

Put the lamp down on the sand where I can see my fingers, because these fingers are the only part of me still doing honest work. Sit. The wind is only going round the wall tonight. I will tell you about the chain old Ibrahim made at Tesh Well, the one with a lotus at its heart that opened the way a bloom does on a cold morning.

He had silver from three towns and not one of them clean. A coin from the south, a bracelet from a dead widow, a spoon from a carrier who had been robbed twice. He melted it all in a clay pot the size of a child's head, and when he poured, the metal ran into beads, round and small as millet seed. He said that was the only way the swags would hang right, dipping the way a collarbone dips when a woman turns her head. The lotus he cut petal by petal with a file he had sharpened on the same rock where his father had died, and he never once hurried it.

The caravan woman came on the third day of the sand wind, her camel bells wrapped in rag. She did not want the pendant. She wanted to know whether the chain would reach the far town before the road shut, and he said yes. She laughed at him. A chain cannot walk, she said.

He finished it anyway, every bead, and hung it on a nail by the door so the lamplight would catch the petals. He never cast the teardrop that should hang from the lotus's tip. He left only a small silver hook. When she came back in spring she turned the chain in her palm and said, good, now I can carry whatever the road gives me. Then she walked out into the sand, and the hook swung like a question nobody meant to answer.
