Ornamental mandala full sleeve on an arm

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo covers the arm from the shoulder down towards the forearm, built from a large central mandala-style medallion with an eye motif, heart shapes and symmetrical ornamental panels. The work uses fine black linework combined with stippled dotwork shading and solid black areas, with grey tones between the motifs. The image is a close, angled side view showing the sleeve against a plain pale wall, with the subject's head cropped out of frame.

"The eye is wrong," said Abbot Osric, holding the lamp higher so the wet lime took the light. "Brother Anselm, you have made it look at the ceiling instead of at us."

Anselm had worked three summers on the chapter house medallion, ringed with heart shapes and symmetrical panels, every line drawn with a rule and a goose quill. He had not meant the eye to stare. He had only used the pot of soot his predecessor left behind, and the soot had sunk into the plaster in clots.

Old Sister Maud, who kept the bees and most of the gossip, said the first abbot had put the eye there to watch for thieves. Nobody believed her. But when Anselm went down to the lower spring that evening to wash his brushes, he found the water had worn a pale ring into the stone, and in its centre a dark hollow where the drip had pitted the rock in dots, fine as a sieve, shaped like a heart with its point turned down.

He carried a flask of that water back up the hill. He mixed it with the soot, not the lime, and painted the eye again with the finest brush he owned, dot by dot until his wrist ached. When the lamp was lowered at compline the medallion held its shadow, and the eye looked down the nave towards the door, as though waiting for someone to come in from the cold and be counted.
