Ornamental floral shoulder tattoo in black

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare shoulder and upper back with a large ornamental tattoo of scrolling flowers, leaves and paisley-like curves. The design is built from fine lines and stippled dots, with heavier solid areas giving depth to the central blossoms. The tattoo spreads from the shoulder blade over the top of the shoulder and down the upper arm, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener of Vell had a daughter who could not sit still. Each morning she climbed the wall behind the lemon orchard and came back with her sleeves full of seed heads and bramble, and each morning her father shook his head at the mess on the kitchen step. He was a mason. He believed in straight lines, and he had spent forty years teaching stone to stay where it was put.

One spring the river rose and took the lower terraces, and the orchard went brown at the edges. The mason's wife said the land had grown tired of being asked. The daughter said nothing. She went up the wall at dusk, pressed her palm to the cold stone, and waited, as the old women had taught her, for the ground to answer through her bones. It answered with a curl. Then another. Within a week there was a vine running along the top of the wall, and it had found its way down the far side, and wherever it touched the earth, something opened.

The mason followed the ferns and bell-flowers to the river bank and stood there a long while. Then he went home and fetched his chisel, not to cut the vine but to clear the stones that kept its roots from the water. He worked all afternoon, and when he finished his arms were scored with thorns and his hands were blistered, and his daughter sat beside him and sharpened the blade for him without a word.

The terraces came back that autumn, wilder than they had been, and the river never again rose so high. People in Vell still say that if you look closely at the old wall, you can find the mason's tally marks carved between the curls, one for every stone he freed, and a small blossom where each mark ends.
