Ornamental stag head design in black
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised stag head in profile, with large antlers that curl into scrolls and leaf-like tips. The face, neck and antlers are filled with dense swirls, spirals, dots and small floral motifs, with bold solid outlines. The image is a solid black design on a plain white background, centred and cut out cleanly.

The stag is wrong again on the third night out of Hull, and you know it before the mate says a word, because you can feel it in the lamp light: the antlers have grown their scrolls in the wrong direction, curling back toward the bowsprit as if the animal means to look behind itself. You set down the gouge and wipe your palms on your trousers. Fourteen days of salt have swollen the grain of the ash block, and the chisel skids on every knot.

You had planned the head in profile, the way the old carvers did, with a clean line of jaw and a proud eye. But the wood has its own opinions. Somewhere past the Bay of Biscay the jaw gave way to spirals, then the neck to a field of dots, each one a brass tack you pressed in with the heel of your hand while the ship rolled. The mate calls it a heathen thing. The captain, who has never once looked at the figurehead, calls it handsome and asks no more questions.
By the time the coast of Chile shows as a grey smudge off the larboard quarter, you have stopped correcting it. Each curl now runs into the next like water finding the lowest path, and the stag looks less like a deer than a current holding the shape of one. You take the last tack from the tin, press it into the place where the ear should be, and leave the rest to the weather.
At Valparaíso the paint blisters first along the dotted throat, where the spray has been hardest. You watch it lift in tiny circles, each one the size of a brass head, and you think that whoever buys this ship next will still have to decide which way the stag is looking.
