Ornate bird with swirls and flowers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised bird, possibly a peacock, with a curved head and a crest, its wings and tail filled with scrolls, dots and paisley-like swirls. Two flower shapes sit at the lower right and lower left, and the tail flows into long curling lines that frame the composition. It is rendered in fine black outline and detailed hatching on a plain white background, with no colour.

The sketchbook came off the belt at Dover with its spine cracked, and the man beside me wanted to know why a woman on a three-day ticket needed forty pages of birds. I had the second bag open already. I was supposed to be checking for cigarettes, not reading. But the drawing on page nine stopped my thumb: a bird with its head turned back over one shoulder, a fan of feathers folded like a hand, and a tail that unspooled into scrolls and paisley until the lines simply ran off the paper.

"My nan drew these," she said, before I asked. "She did one on the back of every letter she sent. Said you could hide a whole road in a tail if you kept your pen moving."
I should have waved her through. Instead I turned the pages slowly. Every bird stood over a flower, and every flower had a dot at its heart, the way a postmark sits on a stamp. Her nan had drawn them on a ferry decades ago, in a notebook gone soft at the corners from sea damp, and the ink had bled a little into the paper where her hand had rested too long.
I closed the book and passed it back. "Keep the pen moving," I said, and stamped her passport without looking at the photograph, which I am not supposed to do. She laughed and said it was the first kind thing a border had ever done for her. I went back to the bags. The bench smelled of cloves and ink, and somewhere down the line a gull kept circling the car park as if it had lost its own route.
