Ornate cross with red centre design
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A standalone illustration of a cross with a pointed, symmetrical silhouette, outlined in bold black and white bands. Swirling tribal-style ornaments and curved scrolls fill the arms, and a large red gem with a dark shaded edge sits at the centre. The design is flat, with clean vector-like linework and a plain white background.

The declaration form asked for value and country of origin. I wrote nothing. The scrollwork on the arms was black lacquer over silver, worked so finely that the curls seemed to turn when I tilted it under the lamp. Kestle Bridge had a box for antiquities and a box for valuables, and in eleven years I had never left both empty.
Then the gem caught the light and I saw a hairline crack running through it, and a thread of something pale rising from the seam. My mother had kept a stone like that on the sill of the village chapel. When the chapel burned, the sill was the only thing left standing, and she always said the stone had kept it so. I did not believe her then.
I stamped the form PASSED without a single question. The man walked back across the bridge into the grey morning, and I sat a long while with the cross under my palm, feeling a warmth come up through the silver like a slow pulse. When the next lorry rattled up, I turned the stone face-down on the shelf, where it went on glowing through the wood.
