Ornate filigree cross line drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical cross with pointed arms, a central circle and fleur-style scrolls along each arm is drawn in single black outlines on a plain white background. The linework is clean and even, with small spiral curls and leaf-like flourishes filling the spaces between the arms. The design is shown in black only, with no shading or colour, and it fills the frame evenly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobias had been hammering the same curl for two days, and it still wouldn't sit true. The forge at the edge of Hollin Wood ticked as it cooled, and beyond the last cottage the trees stood dark and close, the way they always did when the frost was coming. Mrs Aske wanted her husband's marker finished before the ground hardened, and she had paid in advance, in coins wrapped in a handkerchief.

He worked the scroll again, heating the bar until it went the colour of a ripe plum, then bending it around the horn with the flat of his hammer. Each leaf of the fleur came out a little wider than the last. By the third night he had made a cross with arms like spear points and a round boss at its heart, and he could not tell whether the flourishes were meant to reach upward or to hold something in.

On the morning it was due, a girl from the lower cottages came up the track with a pail of milk and stood watching him set the cross into its stone base. She asked why the curls kept turning back on themselves. He said that was how the iron wanted to go, if you let it.

Mrs Aske paid him the balance, touched the boss once with her gloved finger, and walked back toward the village without looking at the trees. Tobias stayed to brush the scale from his hands. The frost came down that night as he had feared, and by morning the cross was white along every curl, the spirals sharp as lace, as if the forest had decided to trace it too.
