Ornate elephant head with mandala on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
An elephant head in profile is filled with intricate ornamental patterns, including a lotus motif above the head and concentric circles across the body. The linework is fine and the shading is built from dense dots and stippling, with a lighter grey halo at the edge of the mandala circle. The design is a single black and grey motif centred on a plain area of skin.

Edith had been filing the brass lamp checks since six, working each one with a fine point and a tin of black japan, and by ten the lamp-room smelled of paraffin and wet wool. The lads brought their tallies to her window in a rush of boots and the clink of tokens, and she handed back the lamps with the day's numbers scratched on the tags.

"Why's the elephant on yours, Mrs Hale?" young Danny asked, turning his check over. He meant the one she had punched into the back of her own lamp, a small head with a flower above it and rings fanning out like ripples from a dropped stone. "Because I saw one once, at Sunderland fair, standing in a ring of sawdust with a painted blanket on its back," she said. "Nobody told it where to put its feet. It just walked round in circles and remembered every step." Danny laughed and ran off, and she kept the point moving, filling the dense dots until the grey halo looked like a moon behind cloud.
At half past two the cage bell rang three times, which meant the last shift was up. She heard the chains rattle before she saw the men, and counted them through the grille the way she always did. Eleven. Twelve. Her Arthur was not among them, and the lamp on the hook beside her was still warm from his hand.
She stood with the point in her fist and drew one more ring on the back of the check, slow and round, until the circle closed.
