Crescent moon with mandala and dangling charms

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a crescent moon decorated with a mandala, leaf-like florals and a row of dots along its inner edge. Three chains hang from the lower curve, each ending in a teardrop or tassel-like drop with small beads. The linework is fine and black, with stippled dotwork used for shading and texture, and the design sits on the outer upper arm against a plain grey top and a yellow-green wall.

The blue crepe had to be finished by eight, so Irene Tapp sat on the cloakroom stool with a needle between her teeth and three strands of jet beads spread across her knee. Mavis kept leaning in the doorway to say the band was already tuning up.

Above the dance floor at the Pavilion hung the moon. Somebody in the thirties had painted it onto the ceiling plaster, a fat crescent with a ring of silver leaves and a gilt mandala blooming in its belly, and every Saturday Irene looked up at it while she waited for the lights to dim. The band leader called it the dreamcatcher. He said the dots along its inner rim were there to catch the wishes that fell out of the dancers' pockets.

She ran out of jet at ten to eight. The last drop was a tassel of bronze bugle beads she had unpicked from her mother's old evening bag, and she fixed it to the lowest chain with a knot her mother had taught her, tight enough that it would not swing loose on the stairs. Mavis said nobody would look at the hem. Irene said somebody always did.

The floor was half full when she stepped off the bandstand edge, and the fringe swung out sideways with each turn and settled again, three ropes of light catching the painted moon. A young man from the docks asked her to dance and she said yes before she could think about the stitches. When the number ended she looked up. The crescent was still there, and one bronze bead had come loose and was rolling under the chairs, and she let it go.
