Ornate heart key with rose and vines

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A pen drawing of an antique key with a heart-shaped bow, scrollwork, and a stem wrapped in thin vines. A small red rose sits on the left of the shaft, with a few red dots along the vines. The linework is dark and uses hatching for shading on the stem, and the background is a pale yellow paper.

The gate has been locked for forty years, and the ivy has grown through its hinges as if it means to keep the secret for itself. You kneel in the wet bed beneath the wall, pulling bindweed from the roots of an old damask rose, when your fingers close on something cold and ridged. It is brass, green at the edges, its bow shaped like a heart and curled over with scrolls.

Mrs Aldous, who has kept the kitchen garden at Harrowgate House since before the war, takes it from you and turns it over in her palm without surprise. "It's not for the gate," she says. "Your grandfather had one just like it. He hung it on a nail in the potting shed." She nods at the rose, its red bloom hanging over the stone like a held breath. "Half the tools in this place are keys to something else."

You try it anyway, after she has gone in for her tea. The shaft slides into the keyhole with a sound like a sigh and turns, stiff and reluctant, and the briar shudders as the gate swings inward. Beyond it there is no lawn, only a row of rose bushes, each one tied with a faded red ribbon, and at the far end a stone bench beneath a bare cherry tree.

A letter lies folded on the seat, weighted with a pebble. It is addressed to whoever comes next with a key. Inside, in your grandfather's careful hand, are only three lines: the roses need pruning in March, the gate was never locked against anyone, and the bench is for sitting on. You sit. You untie the nearest ribbon, loop it through the key's heart, and hang it on the gatepost where the next gardener will find it.
