A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The potter's wheel had stood still since the fire took the drying sheds, and Ilya had grown used to the silence of it. So when the bird came down over the kiln yard at noon, she took it at first for smoke, a long grey curl lifting off the ash heap. Then it turned its head and she saw the eye, bright as a struck coal, and the wings went up and up until they cut the sky in two.

The elders said such birds came once in a generation and took away whatever a village was ashamed of. They brought nothing back but a feather. Ilya's brother had sold the good clay to a trader from the coast and blamed the fire on her, and she had let him. She had not thought the bird would hear that.

The bird did not take her. It walked along the wall of the yard, its tail sweeping the broken pots like a broom of fire, and where each long feather brushed the ground the cracked shards rang, whole again for the length of a breath. It stopped before her, lowered its crest, and waited. Ilya understood that it wanted her to speak the thing aloud.

At last she said it, that she had sold the clay and let her brother be blamed, and her voice cracked like a pot in the kiln. The bird lifted, tail trailing ash, and rose over the ridge until it was only a thread of smoke. That evening the wheel turned under her hands again. On the wet board lay a single grey feather, curled like a question, and she did not put it away.
