Ornate heart tattoo on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large ornamental heart sits on the forearm, with a dark outline, scrolled filigree and a row of small dots along the inner edge. The centre is shaded from deep red to near black, giving the heart depth against the pale skin. The design is centred on the forearm against a dark background with a plastic-covered surface beneath.

Across the floor a man in a grey suit kept looking at her over the rim of his glass. When the foxtrot ended he came to the rail with a playing card held between two fingers. It was the ace of hearts, the old kind with a black scrolled border and a row of small white pips along its inner edge, and someone had worked a dark notch into the top so it looked as if a spade had been pressed into it. "Your mother left this for you," he said. "She said you'd know what the notch meant."

Nell turned the card over. On the back, in her mother's slanted hand, was a room number above the bar and a time, half past eleven. She looked at the clock over the stage, then at the stranger, who was already smoothing his lapel as though he had never doubted she would come.

She tore the card along the notch and gave him the larger piece. The heart she kept. "Dunning owes me four dances," she said, and walked off the floor toward the back stairs, pencil already out, the band playing on behind her.
