Spiral heart tattoo on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a wrist with a bold black outline of a heart containing a tightly coiled black spiral. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on skin. The sleeve behind the wrist has a dark background covered in red heart shapes, which contrasts strongly with the tattoo.

The needle on the Palais gramophone had worn a groove that made every waltz come out a little lopsided, and Ivy Crane had stopped hearing it years ago. What she heard tonight was the bell over the cloakroom hatch, rung three times by Stan Dobbs, who had come for a coat he didn't need yet.

"You'll be wanting your coat, then," she said. "It's only twenty past nine." He said he'd rather wait for the last waltz, so she pulled a brass tag from the rack, numbered and stamped with the hall's name in violet ink. Mrs Pring had shown her how to fill them in, pressing hard so the carbon copy held. Ivy wrote his number in capitals, then, without quite deciding to, drew a small heart beneath it and began to coil a line round inside, round and round, until the nib caught and spat.

Stan turned the tag over and read it upside down. "That's not a heart," he said. "That's a snail with ideas." She laughed, the first time all week, and the laugh went up the stairwell to the band, who were tuning for the last dance. Her mother had always told her hearts were simple things, two curves and a point, and nobody needed to make them complicated.

When the band struck up, Stan slid the tag into his breast pocket and never did collect the coat. Ivy kept the carbon copy tucked in her apron. Years later, after the Palais was pulled down for flats, she still had the ink coiled on that paper, and she still couldn't say which of them had drawn the first turn.
