Ornate mandala crown design with matching drops
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A large ornamental design shaped like a crown or lotus, with a scalloped outer edge, lace-like rings and a central medallion filled with stylised motifs. Solid black areas, fine dotwork and open white shapes create contrast throughout. Two smaller drop-shaped ornaments sit to the right, echoing the pattern of the main piece on a plain white background.

The brass crown had been resting on the bench since the morning, and Marta Quill still had not decided whether to sell it. Her father had made it for the Harvest Fair in the year the river flooded, cutting the lotus petals from sheet tin and punching the lace rings with a nail and a hammer. Every ring was a different count of dots. He used to say a crown was only honest if you could count its patience.

The buyer from the coast had come up the lane twice already, a man who wore gloves indoors and kept touching the drops, two small ornaments of the same pattern shrunk to the size of a thumb. "They are for earrings," he said, "or for a ceremony I have not yet been invited to." Marta told him the set was not for sale, then went to the back room and sat among the offcuts until the lamp guttered.
In the morning she carried the crown out to the fairground, where the carousel horses were being hosed down and the ghost train was still drying its wet hair of cobweb. She set the crown on the tailboard of the cart, centred on the scalloped edge, and let the sun come through the open white shapes until they threw a lace of light across the cobbles. Children gathered. A girl with a cracked violin case asked whether it was a real crown, and Marta said that depended on who was wearing it.
She picked up the drops and fastened them one at a time to the cart's brass lamp brackets, where they swung and chimed against each other. The gloved man came round the corner at noon and stopped. Marta did not look up. She only said that the price had changed, and it was now the price of an afternoon of listening.
