Ornate dreamcatcher with feathers

Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black line drawing of a dreamcatcher hung from a feathered top ornament, with a circular web of radiating lines and a smaller mandala-style ring below. Long feathers with fine hatched detail hang from the lower section, and scrolling filigree sits on either side of the central rings. The drawing uses clean outlines on a plain white background, with no colour or shading.

Sit closer, the oven is still ticking and the flour hasn't settled yet. My grandmother kept the bakery on Tanner Lane when the lamps were still gas, and every morning before the bells she hung a dreamcatcher above the proving racks. Not a proper one, mind. She got it off a tinker who came through with a cart of brass pans, and she wove the web herself from horsehair and waxed thread, round as a clock face, with a little ring of mandala beads hung beneath it like a second moon.

Her rule was simple. Nothing bad gets into the loaves if the web is tight. One winter the baker's boy, Eli Corran, came in soaked to the skin after running from the workhouse, and he asked her why the web caught only the dark things and let the good ones through. She told him the feathers at the bottom did the sorting. Long grey feathers with hatched lines like rain on a window, and they swayed whenever the door opened, so the bad dreams slid down them and dropped into the ash bucket.

He stayed three years. When he left for the docks he took nothing but a loaf and a promise to come back before the first frost. The web is still above the racks, though the feathers have gone brittle and the filigree has rusted to brown lace. I keep it tight anyway. Loaves rise better when somebody is still watching the dark.
