Black and grey seahorse tattoo built from ornate paisley and scrollwork, curling tail and dorsal fin, on the outer thigh.

Ornate paisley seahorse on thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A seahorse is formed entirely from dense paisley and filigree ornament, with its head, snout and curled tail outlined in a fine dark line. The shading moves between solid black and soft greys to give depth within the scrollwork, and the design sits centrally on smooth skin against a plain, evenly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pass me that ladle, boy, and mind the pot, because this story boils slow and I'll not be rushed by a lad with butter on his fingers. You want to know why the galley clock runs wrong? I'll get to the clock. First you must hear about my grandmother's shawl, the one she wove in the mill sheds at Paisley when she was sixteen and still thought the sea was a rumour.

She kept a dried seahorse in a jar on the windowsill, brought home by her uncle off a Madeira boat. Every evening she'd turn it in the lamplight and count its ridges with her thumb. She wanted it woven into the shawl, but not plain, mind. She filled it with the curls and teardrops of the loom pattern until you could not tell where the horse stopped and the paisley began. Her overseer said nobody would buy a fish made of fancy. She sold it to a Glasgow buyer for twelve shillings and never saw him again.

Years later the shawl came back to her in a parcel wrapped in oilcloth, with no note. Tucked in the fold was the seahorse itself, salt-cracked and grey, the very one from the jar. Nobody ever learned who sent it, and I've wondered since whether the sea simply wanted its own portrait returned.

So when you see the ladle curl like that tail on the hook, the one that hangs crooked, don't you touch it. Leave it be and fill the bowls. Now, ladle, boy. Quick, before the stew catches.
