Ornate red ink lettering sketch

Lettering · Colour · Flash

A large decorative letterform is drawn in red fineliner on white paper, with scrolling flourishes, filigree panels and a leafy motif inside the strokes. Fine parallel hatching and cross-hatching give the letter a dimensional, engraved look, and faint grey pencil guidelines are visible beneath the ink. A red pen sits at the top left and a metal pen part at the right, with the composition filling most of the frame.

The grey pencil was still showing under the red when Margaret told me to stop fussing and leave it. The hotel at Coldstream wanted its first capital finished by Friday, and the bridge of the letter was cut so fine that the scrolls seemed ready to lift off the paper. I had spent two nights on it with a steel rule and a tin of fineliners, and every hatched line had to sit between guides I could barely make out.

She took the pen from me without a word and drew the stem in one pull, quick as a customs officer stamping a passport. Then she worked the filigree panel with small, patient strokes, hatching down the shadow side until the letter looked carved rather than printed. The leaf in the lower bowl took her longest. She said the leaf was where a sign-writer showed what she thought of the town, and that the town on this side of the river had always been too proud of its willows.

When the drawing was done she didn't rub out the pencil. I asked her why not, and she tapped the faint lines beneath the ink. "Whoever comes after us has to know where we began," she said. "Otherwise they'll only copy what we made and never learn how we made it." The sheet went up on the wall of the studio that evening, red against white, with the grey guides showing at its edges like the marks of a surveyor's chain. Margaret stood back, nodded once, and went to put the kettle on.
