Owl on a branch with a crescent moon
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised owl with large eyes and tufted ear feathers sits on a curling branch, with a crescent moon arc behind it. The bold, dark outlines use flowing, tapered strokes and a spiral on the wing, with no shading. The design is shown in a single dark ink tone on a plain pale background, centred in the frame.

Agnes Pollard had kept the night lamp at Skerry Quay for thirty-one winters, and every one of them she had sat up with a tin flask of cold tea and a ledger of tides. The owl came the first week of the new moon. It settled on the bare ash branch above the chandler's gate, a thin curl of wood the storms had not yet taken, and turned its head to watch the water.

Her nephew Davey thought it a bad sign and said so over breakfast. He had signed on to a trawler out of Peterhead that spring and wanted the lamp sold and the ledger closed. Agnes only pointed out that the owl never looked at the lamp. It watched the boats, counting them out past the breakwater and counting them back in again.
On the night the Morag Rose was overdue, the owl lifted off the branch and flew low along the harbour wall, crossing the pale arc of the moon, then dropped and came back to its perch. Agnes took her coat and walked the shingle until the riding light showed, a single bead on the black water, and she wrote the hour in the ledger in her neat hand.
Davey was aboard, grey with cold, and he asked how she had known which way to walk. She only nodded at the ash tree, where the owl had settled again, watching the water as though it had never left.
