Ornate sternum mandala tattoo

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a woman's torso, cropped below the chin, with a tattoo centred on the sternum between the breasts. The design is an ornate, symmetrical motif of paisley-like shapes, scrolls and a tapering vertical element, built from fine lines and stippled dots. The photograph is monochrome, with the bikini straps held in her hands framing the tattoo against a wooden backdrop.

The snow closed the mountain pass on the third day of Advent, and Marit, who kept the inn at Halvard's Gap, found four strangers at her table and a pedlar with a bale of shawls he could not sell. He unrolled one by the fire. Its border curled like bracken, and at its centre a teardrop of scrolls and stitched paisley narrowed to a single fine thread that ran off the cloth like a candle flame.

The pedlar said his grandmother had worked the pattern from a dream of a lamp hung in a church that no longer stood. Each night she added one dot of black silk, a stipple no bigger than a barley grain, and each night the wind outside dropped a little further. Marit's youngest, Anja, counted the dots while the men argued over cards, and by the fourth night she had reached a hundred and eleven.

On the fifth morning the road was clear, but the pedlar did not take his shawls. He left the bale on the settle and told Anja that the thread was hers to finish. She sat by the stove with a needle until the tip came out sharp, and the last stitch ran off the edge of the cloth and into her palm.

When the thaw came, Marit found the shawl folded on the settle with its thread still hanging loose, and beside it a single black dot, freshly made, where the lamp's point would be. The track over the pass was green by then, and nobody at the inn could say which way the pedlar had gone.
