Lotus tattoo on the chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a lotus flower tattoo on the centre of the chest. The lotus is drawn in fine line with stippled dotwork shading on the petals, and a thin vertical stem ends in a looped shape, with small dots above and beside it. The black lace top is pulled open at the centre, framing the tattoo against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Ashdown brought the seed packet to the bakery on a Tuesday, which was his first mistake, because on Tuesdays Mrs Gall sold the good bread and everyone in Fenley Market knew it. He set the packet on the counter between the loaves and said the paper had come from a sailor's sister in Rangoon, that it was a lotus, the real kind, and would I put it in the back yard tub where the rainwater collected.

I told him I had no pond and no patience. He said the seeds were older than the war and would wait for me.

So I filled the washtub with peat and river mud and pushed three hard grey seeds into it, and nothing came for a month. In June a stem broke the surface like a fishing line pulled tight, and at its tip a single bud opened. The stem did a strange thing: it curled over itself once, tight, and closed in a loop before it reached the water, as if the plant had tied a knot to keep its balance. Mr Ashdown came round to look and called it a sign. I called it a kink in the stalk. He laughed the way men laugh when they have already decided.

By August the bloom had a clean white heart, and the dew sat in beads on its petals until noon. The loop never unravelled. I still have that washtub, and the stalk still knots itself at the same height every summer, which is how I know it is the same plant.
