Neo-trad style flash design of a brown otter curling through blue water beside a fish, framed by swirling waves and bubbles in a circle.

Otter and fish in swirling water

Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A brown otter curls diagonally across a circular composition, one paw raised near the top right and its head at the lower right. Beside it, a blue fish swims among stylised blue waves, bubbles and white scrollwork. The design uses bold black outlines with coloured pencil or ink shading on the otter's fur and soft blue shading on the water and fish.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Harrow Point believed Mrs Okafor when she said the otter came up the service stairs every Thursday, but the caretaker had found wet prints on the landing twice that winter, small and five-fingered, and he stopped arguing with her.

The otter's name was Sedge, or so the children at the bottom of the block called it, after the reeds that grew where the culvert ran out under the car park. Sedge had come out of the canal when the water was high and the bins were full, and he stayed because the fish in the brick basin behind the bins were the only things in the district that still moved without being told. A silver roach called Ilse lived in that basin. She had been there since before the estate was painted, and she did not much like company, least of all anything with whiskers.

They made a bargain in the end, the way such things get made, over a heel of stale bread. Ilse would show Sedge where the big pike hid under the old lock gates, and Sedge would keep the rats off the water. For a whole summer it worked. Then the council drained the basin to clear out the litter, and the roach was left flapping on the concrete beside the crisp packets.

Sedge did not stop to think. He hauled her back to the canal in his teeth, down nine flights of wet stairs and across the road, and let her go into the deep green water beneath the bridge. She turned once, flicked her tail at the lamplight, and was gone. Sedge kept watch on the bank until the lamps came on properly, and then he went home to the dark under the tower, which was where he had always belonged.
