The cat sat on the crooked hedge and watched her with yellow, unimpressed eyes. Then came another, and another, until twelve of them lined the curl of the lane like ribbon unspooled across the grass. Above the wall a skull with ragged wings drifted past, muttering to itself, and a little cat with bat wings dropped from the hedge onto Winnie's boot and looked up at her as if she owed it money. "That is not a proper cat," called her grandmother from the doorway. "It is a cat with ideas," Winnie said, and crouched so it could climb her arm.

The milk saucers had been her idea, too. All month she had carried a dish up to the wall after school, because the castle's old housekeeper had gone missing and nobody else had thought to feed the strays. Winnie understood now that the cats had been coming down to find whoever kept leaving their supper. The bat-winged one settled into her hair, warm as a new loaf, and a falling star left a trail of dots across the sky, like crumbs, that led straight back to her gate.
