Ouija board headwrap woman sketch
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing of a woman wearing a turban-style headwrap with a pendant and beaded chains. The alphabet of an Ouija board runs across her eyes, and she holds a beaded bracelet and a dark stone ring with long black nails. The bold black outlines are finished with soft pink and grey shading on the face and headwrap, on a cream sheet beside a pen and a red pencil.

The board had been painted onto cream card the summer the Lark came off the mud at Brentford, and by October the letters had worn pale where years of fingertips rested on them. Nell Harrow kept it in a tin on the cabin table, wrapped in a silk scarf the colour of a bruise. Tonight the lamp smoked and the river slapped against the hull, and the boy from the lock cottage sat opposite with his cap turning in both hands.

"It won't tell you anything you don't already know," she said, sliding the upturned glass towards the centre of the board. "Keep your fingers light. Press too hard and it'll spell out whatever you're afraid of."
He wanted to know whether his father could hear him from under the water. Nell said nothing. She watched the glass drift past the N and stop at the O, then slide with a small, stubborn scrape to the W. The boy's breath caught. The glass moved on, unhurried, and came to rest on the last letter it had any reason to reach for.
He read it aloud, slowly, the way children read in the school by the lock. "Y, O, U, R. Hands." He looked down at his own, which were stained a rusty brown at the knuckles, the same colour as the chain grease his father had never managed to scrub out. Nell lifted the scarf and folded it back over the board, and the ring on her finger was cold against the wood.
