Woman in profile with moon and rose

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A drawing of a tattoo design showing a woman's face in profile, looking upward, set within a crescent moon with faint construction lines. A large rose and sprigs of leaves sit below her, and dotted rays radiate behind her head. Bold black outlines, hatching and stippled shading create the forms, using only black and grey with no colour ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had worn down to a paring by the time Ada Crewe reached the Ninety Mile Road, and her father's chart was going soft in her coat. He had drawn the sky on it the summer the well at Sallow Tank dried up, a crescent sitting on a grid of pencilled lines, each line a bearing to water he swore he had seen once and never found again.

She walked by it through the cold hours, counting the dotted stars that ran off the moon's shoulder like a spill of sand. A carter at Coyote Flats had told her the moon never lies about direction, only about distance, and she had decided to believe him because she had nothing else to believe. Her boots were split. The roses she had pressed into the chart's margin had gone the colour of weak tea, and the leaf sprigs inked beside them rattled in a wind that smelled of wet stone.

Near dawn the road dipped into a hollow where the scrub grew thick and dark, leaves glossy as if someone had painted them that morning. A wild rose leaned over a ring of mossy rock. She knelt with the chart folded against her knee and pushed the leaves aside. Beneath them, cold and still, lay water holding a crescent moon she could no longer see in the sky.

She drank with both hands. When she looked up, the moon had gone pale above the ridge, and she understood her father had never been lost. He had drawn the way by the light, not the ground. Ada folded the chart along its oldest crease and left the rock ring clear for the next walker, who would have to tip their face to the sky to find it.
