Outlined flower and lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A simple outlined flower with leaves and small sprigs sits above the words WE ARE NOT OUR FAILURES in black capitals. A thin arrow line runs through the word FAILURES, with arrowhead details at both ends. The linework is solid black ink with no shading or colour, shown straight on against a pale tiled floor.

The seed vault on Halden Ring had been sealed for three hundred years when Ines Okafor-Brandt cracked the outer hatch with a borrowed torch, and the first thing she found was a sheet of paper pinned above the bench. Someone had drawn a flower on it in black ink, five soft petals stacked around a button of a centre, with sprigs sprouting off the sides like afterthoughts. Beneath it, in square capitals, a sentence ran across the page, and a thin line with barbed heads drove through the last word as if to pin it down.

Ine had spent eleven years logging dead cultivars for the ring's council, and she knew a dead species when she saw one. This drawing was not a species. It was an instruction. The lettering insisted the flower was not a failure, which was a strange thing to tell a seed. The first crop in the old hydroponic bay had been tagged FAILED in red, fourteen trays of wilted stock, and someone had come back with ink and argued.
She carried the sheet to the bay and held it against the grow-lamps. The outline was traced so carefully that the leaf veins ran through the paper like wire. Under the bench she found a tin of seeds labelled in pencil with a date that made her laugh aloud in the empty room. She planted one, pinned the drawing beside the tray, and waited.
The seed took nine days. When the first petal unfolded it was lopsided, one side fatter than the other, nothing like the drawing on the wall. Ines stood over the tray for a long time, then took the pencil, crossed out FAILED on the label, and wrote the date beneath it instead.
