Geometric lotus on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of a lotus flower with angular, faceted petals sits on the inner wrist of a raised hand with pale pink nails. The linework is thin, even and dark black, with no shading, and the petals are drawn as straight-edged segments meeting at a central point. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against a plain pale grey wall with a dark green area at the lower left.

The rain had been falling on Saltergate market since before the bells, and Mags Tollan's stall sat under its one loose tarpaulin with a bucket catching the drip. She sold folded things: cranes for weddings, boats for the children, and once a year a single lotus for whoever asked for it honestly. She never cut a curve in her life. Her grandmother had said a curve was a promise the paper could not keep.

A man came in the grey hour holding a square of rice paper gone soft at the corners. He wanted a lotus that would not wilt in a drawer. Mags folded it the old way, valley and mountain, valley and mountain, each crease sharp as a knife edge, until eight petals stood open and met at a single point in the middle. He asked why she did not round them. She said a lotus opens from its heart, and a straight line is the shortest road from the heart to the edge.
He paid in coppers, then in a brass button, then in a promise to bring the flower back when his wife was well again. Mags told him to keep it. The rain eased to a drizzle and the bucket stopped its ticking. At dusk he came back. The paper had been unfolded flat, every crease still sharp, and in its centre he had written his wife's name in pencil. Mags folded it shut again, pressed the point of the heart with her thumb, and handed it back without a word, because a lotus that has been opened once always knows where its middle is.
