Owl in a cap holding a shotgun

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A bold owl wearing a blue cap and an orange and black checked shirt sits on a shotgun, with its yellow talons gripping the barrel. The design uses thick black outlines and flat fills of green, orange, yellow and blue, with simple shading on the feathers. The owl is centred on the image against plain skin, with the shotgun running across the lower part of the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl had come to the Pinfold brothers' gamekeeping hut every October for eleven years, and every year Walter Pinfold swore it was the same bird, because it sat on the same fence post with the same look of having already decided what he was worth. This year it arrived in a checked shirt and a blue flat cap, which was when Walter's wife Doreen put down the kettle and said she would not have it in the kitchen.

Nobody in Thornby Bottom could say who had dressed it. The vicar's boy claimed the cap had been lifted from the church jumble, and the greengrocer swore the shirt was his own, missing since spring along with a bag of Bramley apples. Walter only knew that the shotgun, his grandfather's old twelve-bore, had gone from the rack the night before, and that the owl had it balanced on one foot like a man waiting for a bus he did not much like.

"Rabbits are on the cricket square," Walter told it, in the tone he kept for bad news. The owl blinked slowly, gold-eyed, and did not look at the cricket square. It looked at the hedge where the rabbits lived, then back at him, and he understood with a sinking feeling that it had been waiting eleven years for him to ask the right question.

He went inside, fetched two cups of tea and a Garibaldi, and when he came out again the owl had put the gun down on the step and was holding out one yellow talon, palm up, the way a man holds out his hand for the rent.
