Where the Wild Things Are monsters on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two horned, furry monsters with yellow eyes and sharp teeth, with a small boy in a white suit holding a sceptre between them. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the creatures form, and the fur and skin are rendered in grey, orange and brown. Green leaves fill the background and frame the scene, which is set on a curved part of the body.

Now then, sit down where the grass is dry, and mind the windfalls, they go to vinegar in a day. Old Mr Pelling kept forty trees up on the ridge, and every August the wild things climbed down out of the leaves to see what he was picking, and to see whether he'd notice them doing it.

The boy came up the lane the week the Bramleys came in, a lad with his cap pulled down over his ears and a tin spoon shoved through his belt. He found them asleep in the crook of the big russet, three great shaggy beasts with horns like bent hay rakes and eyes like egg yolks. They woke hungry, as they always do. The one with a face like a wet loaf reached for his ankle with a claw as long as a pruning knife, and the boy, quick as a wren, pulled a bramble stick from his coat and rapped the trunk twice, the way his gran rapped the cellar door.

The whole orchard went quiet. Then the beasts said, in voices like wet boots on gravel, that they wanted a king, and the boy had the sense to look at their long teeth before he answered. He thought about his mother's tea going cold at the bottom of the lane. So he said he would be king until the supper bell and not a minute past. They roared at that, the leaves shook, and every apple on the ridge dropped at once, thump, thump, thump, like a crowd clapping in a field.

When the bell rang he handed the stick back to the largest of them, who held it as carefully as a cup of water. The beasts folded down into the long grass one after another and went to sleep among the windfalls. Walk up there tonight and you'll smell them, sweet and sour together. Mind your feet.
