Owl mandala tattoo on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm and hand bearing a large tattoo of an owl's face, with ornate mandala-like patterns descending towards the wrist. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and clean black outlines, with a lotus-like motif on the back of the hand. The arm is photographed against a cobbled street, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The petrol station at Sankey Flats shuts at midnight, which is why you are the only one still at the pump when the owl lands on the wiper arm of your lorry. It settles there as if it had paid for the seat. Its round face turns towards the cab, unhurried, and the fine dots of its feathers catch the sodium light the way grit catches on a wet windscreen.

Mrs Achterberg, who runs the kiosk with a radio murmuring a football match from Lisbon, tells you without looking up that the bird belongs to the road. The owls on the spur, she says, are drivers who once dozed at the wheel and were given the chance to keep watch for everyone else. You laugh, because you are forty miles from the nearest village with forty tonnes of ceramic tiles behind you, and you have never once nodded off.
You drive on with the owl riding the mirror. Its head turns with each mile post, and you notice it watches the verge rather than you. Where your headlights pick out a hare frozen in the sand, or a shred of blown tyre, the owl drops away and returns, three times in all, before the grey line of the road begins to lighten. By dawn you are counting its dips the way you once counted milestones.
At the layby by kilometre 212 it lifts off without a sound. When you wipe the condensation from the dashboard you find a pale dusting of feathers and grit in the shape of a lotus, its petals spreading from the vent. You leave it there for the next driver, and sit with the engine ticking until the sun clears the ridge.
