Owl tattoo on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A front-facing owl with a hooked beak, wide round eyes and ear tufts sits on the outer arm. Bold black outlines define the body, and the feathers are shaded in layers of grey with solid black accents. The owl is centred on the skin, with a blurred green background and a small dark mark cut off at the left edge.

Sit closer, the lamp will last till the third bell and I'll not tell this twice. There was a gate at Caldera Gap where the road crosses the river, and a guard there called Ferenc Hallo who kept his post for thirty winters. Above the crossbeam sat an owl, grey and black, with ear tufts raised like a bishop's mitre and round eyes that never seemed to blink. The smugglers swore it counted them. When a carter came through with a false floor in his cart, the owl would give one low hoot and Ferenc would know to look.

Then came a February night when a salt merchant named Ilse Corran pulled up with her wagon, bold as brass, asking to be waved through before the owl could see her. Ferenc laughed and said it was only a bird. But the owl dropped from the beam, landed on her tailboard and would not budge, not for the whip, not for Ferenc's lantern. So he unloaded the salt sack by sack, and beneath it he found no contraband at all, only a bundle of letters tied with red thread, a family's last words written across the river and never delivered.
Ferenc let her cross with every one of them. The owl flew back to the beam and said nothing.
When dawn came the beam was bare. On the gatepost lay a single grey feather with a black tip, and Ferenc kept it in his cap until the day he died. They still show that cap in the village, if you go and ask for it.
