Ornate feather on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single feather is drawn vertically along the inner upper arm, with its quill and barbs filled with fine swirls, scrolls and small dots. The linework is dark grey to black and shading is light, so the design reads as an outline with decorative infill. The skin is set against a plain dark background, with a denim top and brown trousers at the edge of the frame.

Sit closer, the fire is good tonight and the wind has teeth. You want to hear about the feather that crossed the mountain pass in the coat of a tinker's daughter, do you? Then hush. The pass at Kessel Gap was a place where guards counted everything twice, and where a clever woman learned to hide what she carried in plain sight.

Her name was Marit, and she carried no papers, only a peacock's quill wrapped in oiled cloth and a bundle of needles her father had given her. The guard at the gate was a man who loved pattern more than sense. He turned every button over and tapped each seam, but when he reached her sleeve he stopped, because a feather had been drawn there in ink, fine as frost on glass, its barbs curling into scrolls and its quill spotted with dots like rain on a window. Who would smuggle a thing that beautiful? He squinted, shook his head, and waved her on.
What he never learned was that the ink had been pricked into her skin by her father's hand, and that every swirl was a word in the old tinker's code, telling the far side of the pass which road was safe and which bridge had been burned. Marit walked down into the valley under the white peaks, and by the time the guard thought to wonder about her sleeve, the feather had already flown.
