Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash

A hand-drawn design sheet showing two owls with stylised feathers and swirling plumes. The owl on the right is painted in soft blue-grey and warm skin tones with fine feather detail, and holds an ornate skeleton key. The owl on the left is rendered in pencil linework with shading, and the paper shows extra claw studies and colour swatches at the edges.

The key had been in the owl's beak since the winter the Tallow seam flooded, and nobody in Shadwell Pit could say who had first put it there. Old Mags Renwick swore it was the same bird that sat on the headgear through the strike, turning its head sideways to watch the cages go up and down, never blinking at the men who shouted at it. The lamp room had been locked since then, and the key was the only thing in the village that anyone wanted and no one had been able to take.

Tom Hebburn was twelve and had been a lamp-boy for a month when he climbed the slag heap after dark. His father's last lamp still hung on its hook inside that room, and Tom had decided he would have it back. He found the owl perched on a broken pit prop with its feathers ruffled against the frost. The other owl, the older one with the pencilled wings, stayed high in the dead elm behind it, watching without a sound.

The owl with the key looked at Tom for a long time. Then it dropped the key onto the wet cinders at his feet and flew low over the ponds, out past the last fence where nothing had grown since the colliery opened. Tom picked up the key. Its bow was shaped like a heart, worn smooth by a beak. He did not go to the lamp room. He followed the owl's track through the frost to an old drift door in the hillside that he had never seen before, and the key turned in it as easily as bread.

Beyond the door was a field of barley under a warm sun, and his father's lamp was hanging from a hawthorn, burning steady and unlit by any coal. Tom took it down. Behind him the drift door shut itself, and when he looked back there was only the hillside, and above it the owl with the key, settling into the grey light beside its quiet companion.
