Owl with pocket watch and flowers sketch
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A red pencil drawing of a horned owl facing forward, with its wings folded at its side. A pocket watch hangs from a loop of ribbon below it, and a cluster of flowers sits at the bottom left. The linework is fine and sketchy, with feathers and scales shaded by hatching and short strokes on white paper.

The ferry to the island of Hallow Stack ran only when the tide allowed, and the old keeper, Maren Vell, had kept its lantern for thirty-one winters. She kept a brass pocket watch on a red ribbon around her neck, wound every night, and it was the only clock aboard. The crossing took exactly as long as the watch said it would, no more, no less, and no captain had ever argued with her about it.

One grey evening a boy came down the pier with a suitcase and no ticket. He said his mother had sent him to the island to find a great horned owl that had been seen on the cliffs. Maren told him that owls did not keep ferry hours, and that the boat left when the watch said so. The boy sat down on the bollard and waited, and by the time the fog came in he had fallen asleep with his head on the suitcase.
When she woke him, the watch had stopped. The hands stood together at a quarter to midnight, and the owl that had been perched on the rail beside the boy turned its amber eyes on her and did not blink. Maren understood then that she had been telling the time for the owl, not for the ferry, and that she would have to choose which of them to hand it to. She lifted the ribbon over her head, pressed the watch into the boy's palm, and stepped aside to let the bird fly home across the water.
