Owl with spread wings and geometric ornament
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical owl with wings fully spread faces the viewer, with a detailed face and feathers rendered in fine linework and stippled shading. A central mandala-like rosette and geometric patterns fill the chest and surrounding panels, with feather motifs at the lower edges. The drawing is entirely black ink on white, with dense, ornamental detail across the whole composition.

Mo Gallagher had been told twice by the showman to keep the owl out of the Ferris wheel cars, and twice she had found it back on the top bar at dusk, turning its head through a full half circle to watch the lights come on. The fair had pitched on the Tyne car park for nine days, and nobody else in the crew would go near the bird. "It's not a pet," Dessie said. "It's a tax inspector with feathers."

She kept the ledger in the back of the ghost train, where the paint on the plywood skulls was still tacky from Tuesday. Each night the owl rode the chair-o-plane with her, wings spread over the rail as if the fairground were a sky it had bought outright. The cash tins never came up short while it watched. The lad who skimmed from the candyfloss stall found his float swapped for brass buttons, and nobody could say how.
On the last night the rain came sideways off the river and the generator coughed itself quiet. Mo carried the lantern to the caravan with the painted rosettes, where the showman kept his papers, and the owl came down off the rail without being asked and settled on the shelf above the safe. Its eyes, two rings of amber she had never seen by daylight, held hers until she understood. She turned the dial. Inside, folded in oilcloth, lay the deed to the pitch, signed over to her eleven years back, and a note in Dessie's cramped hand: The bird goes with the ground.
She tucked a loose grey feather into the ledger under the day's date, left the lamp burning for the morning, and went out to see the wheel stopped for the last time.
