Wolf head with arrows and eye triangle
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a wolf head facing forward, with a three-dimensional cube pattern across its forehead and a mandala-like flower beneath its jaw. Below, crossed arrows sit above a triangle containing an open eye, flanked by stylised clouds and trailing lines. The linework is bold and clean, with shading built from dots and fine hatching in greys and black on a pale textured background.

Ida had been told the old wolf kept the pass, and she laughed about it until she reached the cairn at Scarrow Gap and found the carving itself: a wolf's head above a dry well, its brow stacked with stepped cubes that seemed to tip toward her whichever way she tilted her lamp. Beneath the jaw, a ring of stone petals opened like the leaves of a lock.

The surveyors in the valley below had lost three mules and a boy to the gap in a single winter. Ida had a theodolite, a ledger and a pair of brass arrows that pointed nowhere she could agree with. The carver had cut crossed arrows above a triangle, and inside the triangle sat an eye with no lid. Cloud shapes banked on either side, and the water that ran from the eye had worn grooves into the rock that might have been rain or might have been hair.
She sat on the lip of the well and laid her map flat on her knee. The arrows pointed to the two valleys she had been paid to join. Only when she lined the carved eye up with the north star did the cubes on the wolf's brow resolve into a stair, winding down into the dark.
She did not take the stair. She coiled her chain on the well's lip, turned the theodolite so the wolf's eye sat dead centre in its crosshair, and wrote in the ledger, beneath Scarrow Gap, a single word: Kept.
