Painted scene tattooed on a tongue
Other · Colour · Photo
A close-up of an open mouth with glossy red lipstick shows a detailed tattoo covering the tongue. The design depicts a crowded scene with horses, winged dragons, flames and small figures, rendered with fine shading. Muted golds, browns and blues dominate the composition, with the tongue's curve shaping the scene.

The mules would not take the bend below Scarrow Crag, not for the whip or the bread in Teodor's pocket. He stood with the rope slack in his fist and watched the snow come down the far side of the pass, thin as flour through a sieve. Behind him the salt cart creaked and ticked as it cooled, and the wheel hub had already begun to frost.

Old Mira from the beacon house had told him the rule when he was a boy. The crag keeps the horses that were promised to it, and they come down out of the rock when a man carries something he has not declared. Teodor had declared nothing. Under the salt sacks sat two casks of pear brandy from the wrong side of the border, and he had sworn to the toll clerk that the cart held only salt, which was almost true.
The first horse came out of the smoke above the road with its mane lit like a torch, then a second, then a whole company of them, their hooves striking sparks from the stone. Behind them winged serpents wound through the cloud, scarlet at the throat, and small grey figures ran at the wheels carrying lanterns. Teodor dropped the rope and shouted the truth into the wind before he had decided to: the brandy, the border, the silver he had kept back from the clerk.
The fire horses stopped. The flames along their flanks sank to embers, and the leader lowered its burning head and took the rope in its teeth. It drew the cart down the pass in the time it took him to say the word for mercy, and at the foot of the valley the snow was already falling soft on the inn roof. He paid the toll the next morning, every coin of it. The brandy went back over the border in a barrow, and the crag has been quiet ever since.
