Realistic skull tattoo on a leg

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A large skull fills most of the frame, shaded in greys and black with soft highlights across the bone surface. Red ink sits in the eye sockets, nasal opening and open jaw, creating a strong focal accent against the grey tones. Smaller bones and shadowed skin surround the skull at the edges, with a blurred pale background behind the limb.

The lift in Calder House had been dead since Tuesday, so it fell to me to climb down the shaft with a torch clenched in my teeth and the council's complaints ringing in my ears. The pit at the bottom was black oil and old grit. Under the car's buffer, wedged in a coal sack gone soft as wet bread, I found a skull.

It was clean, or cleaner than anything else down there. Someone had packed the eye sockets with red wax from the emergency lamp's old filter, and the jaw had been propped open with a bent hairpin, as though it had been mid-sentence when the building stopped listening. I brought it up in a carrier bag, which I still regret, and set it on the caretaker's desk while I rang the lift engineers, who said they'd come Thursday.

Mrs Varley from fourteen came down that evening to complain about the noise. She saw the bag, went pale under her rouge, and told me her husband Eddie had worked the lifts in 1968, before they put the new cars in. He used to say the old shaft kept what it was given. She didn't want the skull back and she didn't want it thrown out either.

So it stays on the shelf in lost property, between a left glove and a umbrella with no spokes. Every night the red lamp in the motor room throws its colour through the glass panel, and every morning there is a custard cream lying in front of the jaw, untouched, and nobody on the estate will admit to leaving it.
