Painted tree and meadow across a back

Back · Colour · Photo

A painted landscape covers the upper back, with a leafy tree on the left and a grassy field of red and orange flowers across the lower area. The brushwork is loose and blended, with soft edges and greens, yellows and pinks dominating the palette. The subject is framed from behind with a halter top strap and a light sky in the background.

The 6.12 to Ledbury was cancelled again, so you sat on the bench under the canopy at Shrewley Road with your sketchbook open on your knee and the wind pulling at its corners. Nobody else was waiting. A signal clanked somewhere down the line, and a pigeon walked the length of the platform as if it had paid for a ticket.

Your aunt Marion had painted the view from her kitchen window every spring for thirty years, the same oak at the bottom of the allotment, the same strip of meadow running off towards the water tower. She never finished one. She said the trick was to stop before the paint went muddy, and you never managed it, which is why the sketchbook is full of half-trees. Today you were trying the meadow: a daub of vermilion for the poppies, lemon for the late grass, a wet thumb to blur the edge where the field gave up and became sky.

The train came in just as the light went thin. The doors opened, nobody got off, and a guard waved a green flag at no one in particular. You stood up to board, then stopped, because the drawing looked finished for the first time. You had stopped at the right place without meaning to, the way Marion always said you would.

You sat by the window on the way home and held the page up against the passing fields. The colours swam into the real ones, pink into clover, yellow into oilseed, and for a few miles you could not tell which meadow you were looking at.
