Pair of angel wings line design

Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical pair of stylised angel wings is drawn in solid white on a black background, with feather shapes outlined in thick black lines. The feathers are layered in rows and taper to pointed tips at the bottom, with a few sharp marks suggesting texture along the quills. The image has no shading or colour beyond the black and white contrast.

The lamp had been dark for nine minutes when Edith Calloway found the feathers on the gallery rail, wet and laid out in two neat halves as if someone had folded them there and thought better of leaving. She counted them by torchlight. Eleven rows on the left, eleven on the right, the outer ones as long as her forearm and curved like the blades of a scythe.

Her brother had sworn the cloud over Skerrymore was only sea fog, the sort that made the rock keepers lose their nerve. He had gone down the ladder at dusk to fetch paraffin and not come up. Edith climbed the last iron rungs with the feathers under one arm and the wind trying to tear the door from her hand.

The mechanism groaned when she turned the crank. Light swung out across the water, and in the wash of it she saw the wings: pale, enormous, folded over the sea like a pair of hands in prayer, the black water showing through each gap between the feathers. They lifted once, slowly, and a gust came off them that smelled of cold iron and salt. She did not lower the lamp. She set the feathers back on the rail one row at a time, the way her father had taught her to lay out nets, and kept the beam steady until the sky began to grey.

By morning the wings were gone. Her brother came up the path at seven with a cut on his cheek and a story about a boat that had nearly struck the reef. Edith never told him about the feathers. She still kept the lamp trimmed.
