Symmetrical tribal phoenix design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A bold, symmetrical design showing a bird-like figure with spread wings, a central body and a long curved crest on each side. The wings and tail are built from sharp flame-like black shapes, with fine interior cut lines and small inner details. The image is solid black on white with no colour, and the composition fills the frame evenly from top to bottom.

The cook on the Marigold Dane kept a tin of matches in the bread locker, and every winter when the coal ran low she would take one out and strike it against the wall just to hear it spit. Her name was Oona Teague and the crew said she could bake a loaf out of the smell of rain. She told them about the bird her grandmother had drawn on the flour sack, a thing with wings spread wide as a door and a crest curling up either side of its head like smoke that would not lie down. Every flame that bird had ever been given, her grandmother said, it had kept, and it would hand them back to anyone who was cold enough to ask. The boys laughed at her. Oona put the kettle on the last of the coal and said nothing more about it.
When the ice split in the morning, the boys swore that the galley stove was roaring with a heat that came from no coal at all, and the copper pans were hot enough to blister a thumb. Oona was found asleep against the bread locker, the matches still in her fist, and on the flour sack a black bird stood with its wings open, all its sharp flames folded neatly back into the paper.
