Paisley and floral lower leg sleeve
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A leg is shown from mid-calf to toes, resting against a burgundy satin backdrop. A large ornate tattoo of paisley swirls, flowers and fine scrollwork wraps up the calf and down toward the ankle, with dense dotted shading and fine outlines. Small areas of teal fill some of the flower centres and petals, while the rest of the design is in dark grey and black.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Agnes Lennie had the pattern half pricked out on card when the mill whistle went for the second time that week, and she did not look up. Her daughter Jean was at the bench with the tin of teal dye, dabbing it into the little cups where the petals would sit, and every dab felt like a small argument.

"It's too much blue," Jean said. "Nobody wants a flower with its heart full of sea."
"Then they can want something else," said Agnes. She pinned the next sheet to the board. It was a paisley, the teardrop bent over on itself like a shepherd's crook, and inside it she had drawn a second teardrop, and inside that a third, each smaller than the last, until the eye gave up. Her own mother had drawn them the same way on the back of tea-chest paper, in a room above a chandler's shop near the harbour.
Jean wanted to know why the shawls from the east were folded so tight, and Agnes told her what she had been told: that a good pattern should keep turning without ever arriving anywhere. Jean said that sounded like a sermon. Agnes said most sermons were patterns that had been taught badly.
On the last morning before the order went down to the coast, Jean dipped her brush once more and laid the teal into the centre of the largest flower, then sat back and sighed. The dots had gone grey in the lamplight, and the whole sheet seemed to lean towards the window. "There," she said. "Now it looks like it's going somewhere."
