Mandala wrist cuff tattoo
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A wide band of ornamental mandala designs wraps around the forearm and wrist, with a solid black stripe across the centre. The linework is fine and precise, with dotwork filling and scrollwork motifs including a central heart-shaped panel and teardrop pendant. The image is black and grey against a plain black background, with the hand and wrist shown in natural skin tone.

Dear Tomas, the guard at Kestrel Bridge held my papers up to the lamp for so long that the moth inside the glass gave up and died. I want you to know I did not argue. I kept my hands flat on the counter, the way Mama taught us, and let him read every line twice.

He asked what the black band meant. I told him it was the night the river rose and we walked the sheep road without a lantern. He did not understand, and I did not expect him to. Above the band the lace runs up toward the elbow, and at its centre sits the heart Mama drew for us with the blunt end of a pin, scrolled like a young fern. Below it hangs the little teardrop, which Aunt Petra says is a seed waiting for rain.
The dots are the hard part to explain. Each one was pricked by a man in a room above the bakery in the lower town, and he counted them aloud so I would keep still. Eleven hundred, he said, one for every step between here and the sea. I counted along with him. My arithmetic has never been good, but I think he was close.
Tell Mama the guard let me through in the end. Tell her I have not lost the pin.
