Paisley and leaf mandala tattoo design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of an ornamental design built from paisley shapes, leaves, scrolls and a shaded circle at the centre, with dotted lines trailing down through the composition. The linework is fine and detailed, with stippled dotwork used for shading on the scrolls and a grey tone on the central circle. The design is drawn in black on a plain white background and is symmetrical in its overall layout.

Dear Ruth, the indigo vat has finally given up its colour and I have been scrubbing my hands with pumice for an hour, so forgive the blue smudges on this page. Mr Haddow wants the Bombay shawl pattern copied out in full before the autumn sales, every paisley curl and every little leaf, and he will not let me use a stencil. He says a stencil teaches the hand to be lazy. So I sit under the north window with his old pen, counting dots until my eyes swim.

The strangest part is the pale circle he had me shade in the middle of the design. He calls it the seed, and he wants it grey, not black, so that it looks like a pearl sitting in a nest of thorns. I asked him why a shawl needs a pearl and he laughed and said the pearl is what the buyers look at first, even if they never know it. Then he told me about his mother, who used to sew the same pattern onto her own petticoats, and how she swore that if you traced a dotted line from the edge all the way to the centre, you would arrive at whichever harbour you were homesick for.
I tried it last night with a ruler and a candle. The trailing dots ran down past the scrolls and off the paper, and I could not follow them past the margin. Still, I have decided the pearl is the port where Mr Haddow's ships unloaded their first bales, and that the leaves are the sails folding up for the night. Tomorrow I will ask him which harbour his mother meant. I suspect he will say it is the one you have to draw yourself. Your loving sister, Nell.
