Paisley forearm tattoos with rolled white sleeves

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are pressed together, each covered with a large ornamental design of paisley motifs, scrolls and fine floral filigree. The linework is dark and fine, with soft grey shading filling the larger shapes and dotted detail in the gaps. The white rolled-up shirt sleeves and dim background keep the focus on the ink, which wraps from the wrists up towards the elbows.

Dear Ada, the lamp has been guttering since eleven and I have not finished the border on the Carrick shawl, so forgive the ink blot on this page. The mill bell rang the late shift off an hour ago and the street outside is quiet except for a cart somewhere on the Renfrew road. I have been working on the paisley again. Mr Lennox wants the teardrop heavier at the crown, the way the Kashmir sample had it, though I told him the wool will not hold a line that fine without bleeding.

I spent the evening with the squared paper and a set of brass dividers that were my mother's. Each curl turns back on itself, then breaks into a fern of smaller seeds, and every seed needs its own small stop so the eye can rest. Halfway through the second scroll I realised the design only works in pairs. One card cannot be read alone. The left half leans in and the right half answers it, so I have been drawing both at once, each to be mirrored by the other across the loom.

When I had finished I laid the two cards face to face on the table and pressed their edges together, the way you press your palms before a prayer. In the lamplight the curls met and the filigree ran through both, and for a moment it looked like one leaf folded down the middle, the crease running straight through the heart of it. I stood there longer than I should have.

Come on Saturday and bring the good scissors. Do not let Mother near the cards, she will want to tidy the corners. Tell me if the crown reads too heavy from the back of the hall, because I can no longer tell.
