Paisley ornament tattoo on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large symmetrical ornament sits on the front of a thigh, built from paisley curves, a central flower and leaf motif, and a tapering lower point. The linework is fine and dense, with stippled dot shading filling the inner areas. The image is in black and grey against a dark background, with a hand holding a dark skirt at the top of the frame.

The pears were coming down faster than we could gather them, thudding into the wet grass of Mirza's orchard while the wasps grew drunk on the windfalls. I had my grandmother's shawl folded over one arm, the one she carried out of the city the year before the flood, and I kept touching its border the way you touch a sore tooth.

Nana had never woven anything herself. She sold shawls and taught me to read them. The teardrop at the centre, she said, was a seed that had grown a crown, and every dot was a stitch counted by someone's patient eye. The curl at its tip bent back like a branch under fruit. I sat on an upturned crate at the end of the rows and tried to draw it on the back of a delivery note, but my pencil kept making it lopsided.
At dusk Mirza's boy came running with a torn sack. I had already found the thing I was looking for. Inside the lining, where the silk had gone soft, a pear leaf lay pressed flat, brown at the edges, folded into the heart of the teardrop. Someone had hidden it there, Nana or perhaps her mother, the summer of a wedding nobody talked about. I held it to the lamp and its veins matched my drawing exactly.
I didn't finish the drawing that night. I sewed the leaf back where it had lain for so long, smoothed the border over it, and left my copy lopsided on purpose, so whoever read it next would have to look twice.
