Full leg sleeve with peony and hands
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two legs are covered in a full sleeve of fine black ornamental linework, with a large peony at each knee and hands shown in a mudra-like pose on the shins. Dense patterns of leaves, scrolls and wave-like forms fill the spaces between the motifs, and the shading is solid black with no colour. The photograph is taken from above, with the legs laid across a pale bed.

You have been carving the same wave into the chapel lintel for three winters, and the old man who taught you says the sea never repeats itself, only the grain of the wood does. The boat from the mainland comes on Thursdays when the swell allows, and today it does not. You sit on the harbour wall with the chisel across your knees and watch the peonies the widow Marr painted on her shutters bleach in the salt.

She comes down the steep lane with a bundle under her arm, a length of linen folded like a sail. Inside are the hands she wants: two palms pressed together and turned outward, the shape the fishwives make when they bless a net. Her husband drew them for the drowned, she says, and they are to go where the cold gets in. You tell her linen takes ink poorly and would need stretching on a frame, and she laughs at you, a short bark like a gull.
Through the autumn you work the fine lines with a quill and lamp soot, leaves branching off scrolls, the wave forms curling round so that when the wind lifts the cloth the whole pattern seems to move. You learn that the dense parts are there to keep the eye busy, and the open parts are where the blessing gets through. The peony goes at the knee, because the knee is where a prayer bends.
When the boat finally docks in spring, the widow is gone and someone else has repainted her shutters. Her linen sits folded on the harbour wall under a flat stone, and tucked beneath it is a note in her square hand: the waves are yours now, mind the edges. You unfold it. Every inch is inked, and not one stitch of the sea has got through.
