The snow closed the Hollin Pass on Tuesday and it has not reopened since, so the coach you were meant to catch home is buried somewhere under the lower field with the mail sacks. Mr Abbott has given up trying to dig it out and says spring will do it for us. We have eleven guests and a cellar full of blueberry jam, which is the only sensible thing Mother ever taught either of us.

The pansies you left in the window box survived, which I did not expect. I found them this morning under a crust of ice, purple as a bruise and no bigger than a farthing, their faces turned up to the grey light as if they had been waiting for someone to come through the door. I cut them for the breakfast tables and the Pargeter boy asked what they were called. I told him they were called thoughts, which is what Mother said they were, and he looked very puzzled and ate his egg.

Mrs Hale in room four has been writing letters too, though she will not say to whom. Last night she came down to the kitchen in her stockings and asked for something green to put in her cup, and I gave her a few dried blueberry sprigs from the back shelf because they were the only green thing left. She drank it without sugar and said it tasted like August. I thought about you then, standing in the cold orchard with the basket, and how you always said I should leave this place and see the sea.

Come home when the road clears, or do not, but write. I will keep a pansy pressed for you between the pages of the ledger.
